Skin Cancer surgery
Objectives
The diagnosis of cancer can be very difficult to accept. Understanding that skin cancer treatment may result in visible scars is often traumatic for the patient.
Our goal is to understand your concerns and accompany you throughout the process, analyzing the best reconstructive options so that your results are not only appropriate but also deliver the best possible aesthetic outcome.
Skin cancer generally requires a surgical procedure to completely remove it and address the oncological disease. This is done using special techniques to preserve your health and appearance.
Procedure steps
Once a presumptive or definitive diagnosis of skin cancer is made and depending on its location, size, type, etc., the removal procedure is carried out, which consists of different steps:
-Anesthesia: Used for your comfort during surgery. These procedures are usually performed with local anesthesia or sedation but may be done under general anesthesia depending on the case and medical recommendation.
-Removal: Various methods are used to extract the skin lesion depending on the type of tumor and its characteristics. Typically, excisions require taking a safety margin larger than the lesion, leaving a slightly larger defect. This margin is necessary to eliminate all tumor cells that may be present at the periphery of the visible lesion. The incision chosen usually aims to achieve the best functional and aesthetic results.
-Reconstruction: Small lesions can be directly reconstructed by closing the defect with an aesthetic technique. For larger lesions, tissue may need to be transferred from adjacent or distant areas for reconstruction, a procedure known as a flap.
Postoperative care
- It is important to follow postoperative instructions for the best possible result.
- Scar care is a factor we take very seriously. Depending on your skin type and procedure, we will recommend the best products and treatments for you to properly care for them.
- After completing treatment for tumor lesions, follow-up with a dermatologist is mandatory.
