Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to eliminate surplus skin and fat from the abdominal area, often accompanied by the restoration of weakened or separated muscles. This results in a firmer and more toned abdomen.
In performing abdominoplasty, we not only address surface-level tissues such as skin and subcutaneous fat but also attend to deeper layers, including muscle repair.
Factors contributing to abdominal wall weakness and excess skin and fat may include:
– Pregnancy
– Significant fluctuations in body weight
– Aging
– Genetic predisposition
– Previous abdominal surgeries
Indications
Generally, candidates for these procedures include individuals who:
- Have excess skin and/or fat in the abdominal region.
- Experience swelling in the abdominal area during physical activity.
- Have developed umbilical hernias following pregnancies or significant weight changes.
- Have had pregnancies.

- There are several techniques of abdominoplasty described, and they must be tailored to each particular patient. Each person is unique and has different expectations.
- The abdominoplasty technique can be combined with other surgeries, often with liposuction, which helps eliminate localized fat deposits in the abdominal area, or skin tightening techniques that help improve its characteristics.
- There are numerous cases where weakness of the abdominal wall is associated with separation of the rectus abdominis muscles (diastasis) and/or hernias. In such cases, it may be necessary to perform an ultrasound as part of the pre-surgical studies. These conditions can often be addressed during the same surgery.
